Regular readers will be familiar with Lushlight towers aka Westdowne House- I inhabit the first floor of a house that has remained fairly unchanged for 150 years. I love it- the Georgians had a sense of space and the larger the better. The ceilings are around eleven foot high and the windows huge- its why I moved in - the light is magnificent- even on dull days.

The space is accommodating and though I share, it still feels that I am able to ‘swing large cats.’ For sure I should love to inhabit it all by myself but needs must. One thing I have to do before Christmas is clean the windows and hang the gold velvet curtains- it is draughty. The light early Sunday morning showed them up.

Remembering the fallen......

Just what is it that we remember on this November Sunday? A few minutes a year to acknowledge the sacrifice of thousands of lives given in the name of Queen and Country? The horror of the 'Great War' where tens of thousands died in just hours? Some remember the futility and waste and I side with them.

My father served the Royal Welsh Fusiliers as Chaplain and proudly talked of his involement in the D day landings. Every Rembrance Sunday I would attend church with him and he talked of what he was remembering. Along with the memories of lost colleagues, heroic stories and brave deeds he had one over riding rememberance. The central rememberance for my father was the lesson to be learned from the 'war to end all wars' - sadly it didn't!

We still believe in wars, we still have faith in our ability to overthrow regimes and foreign governments- we call it the support of freedom - the defence of allies.

I remember the views of my Father who simply quoted 'thou shalt not kill' and 'love thy neighbour' - I completely accept that we need protection from evil and despotic regimes. But I fear for the soul of any nation or individual that takes the life of another under amy name.

Salvatore Ferragamo was born in 1898 in Bonito, near Naples, the eleventh of 14 children. After making his first pair of shoes at age nine, for his sisters to wear on their confirmation, young Salvatore decided that he had found his calling. He always had a passion for shoes. After studying shoemaking in Naples for a year, Ferragamo opened a small store based in his parent's home. In 1914, he emigrated to Boston, where one of his brothers worked in a cowboy boot factory. After a brief stint at the factory, Ferragamo convinced his brothers to move to California, first Santa Barbara then Hollywood. It was here that Ferragamo found success, initially opening a shop for repair and made-to-measure shoes, which soon became prized items among celebrities of the day, leading to a long period of designing footwear for the cinema. However, his thriving reputation as 'Shoemaker to the Stars' only partially satisfied him. He could not fathom why his shoes pleased the eye yet hurt the foot, so he proceeded to study anatomy at the University of Southern California.

After spending thirteen years in the United States, Ferragamo returned to Italy in 1927, this time settling in Florence. In 1927 he returned to Florence and began to fashion shoes for the wealthiest and most powerful women of the century, from the Maharani of Cooch Behar to Eva Peron to Marilyn Monroe. In 1929 he opened a workshop in the Via Mannelli, concentrating his efforts in experimenting with design, applying for patents for ornamental and utility models and some related inventions. Forced to file for bankruptcy in 1933 due to bad management and economic pressures, Ferragamo nonetheless expanded his operation during the 1950 to a workforce of around 700 expert artisans that produced 350 pairs of hand-made shoes a day.

Ferragamo was always recognized as a visionary, and his designs ranged from the strikingly bizarre objet d'art to the traditionally elegant, often serving as the main inspiration to other footwear designers of his time and beyond. Salvatore Ferragamo died in 1960 at the age of 62, but his name lives on as an international company, which has expanded its operations to include luxury shoes, bags, eyewear, silk accessories, watches, perfumes and a ready to wear clothing line. At his death his wife Wanda and later their six children (Fiamma, Giovanna, Fulvia, Ferruccio, Massimo and Leonardo) ran the Ferragamo company. His most famous invention is arguably the "Cage Heel". Fiamma (Salvatore's eldest daughter prematurely died in 1998) inherited her father's inimitable talent and came up with the "Vara pumps" in 1978.

The Salvatore Ferragamo Museum opened in Florence in 1995. Located on the second floor of Palazzo Spini Feroni, the Museum extends over four rooms and comprises A collection of over ten thousand models of shoes created by Ferragamo over forty years, from the Twenties to his death in 1960. The Museum also has a small collection of period shoes (18th and 19th century), a collection of clothing from 1959 onwards, a collection of handbags from 1970, and a huge document archive.

I have never really been a stamp collector- there were a couple of old colonial albums my father tried to interest me in as a child-I was more intrigued by the postmarks and the visible signs of great distances travel- perhaps that is the true romance of stamps.

This humble little printed image may have carried news of great adventure- births-deaths and marriages. It could have been the token to allow the continuation of a trans atalantic love affair- who knows- art vs commerce

This young American photographer truly uses natural light with a great talent. It seems that Julia Galdo appreciates the power of natural light and uses it to add a subtle reality to the image- though she spends much time researching shoots and locations her imagery is very naturalistic and seemingly spontaneous.

The included works are from Feaverish Photography and accompany a fascinating in depth interview. Her work with ageing models has a spiritual beauty that is very specific to her. It seems to me that she captures loneliness but is able to turn it into an emotion that is almost acceptable- even empowering. She often works in partnership with Cody Cloud under the name JUCO.

Her portfolio includes work for Nike Air and Microsoft, Wells Fargo and 7x7 Magazine.

Regular readers of this blog (and it is gratifying to know that you now regularly number to three figures a week) will appreciate the efforts that Lushlight is making to gain a foothold in the world of professional photography. This year has seen five images sell to picture stock databases, mentions in jpg magazine and photo net- babies captured, families shot and a cupcake website delivered! I produced a promotional portfolio for a young singer and I have recorded events for two south coast ‘cultural’ journals. All are added to the C.V. It’s a lovable slog and nowhere near an income as yet, but a form of apprenticeship. If I have what it takes it will happen- Gods time not mine? However there are occasions when an image comes along which makes a lot of the slog all worthwhile.

There were a few this time last year when I was close to the greatest muse. Those pictures are archived with great and intimate fondness- there was earlier this year a great shoot at Pilsden Manor and a very broody few frames from Chesil Bank – all of which are up on the blog- they pleased me, as did the images of Dorchester and the photos of my first grandson. Relatives and landscapes apart there is seldom a finer joy than to photograph beautiful friends. There have been a few times this year when I have been thrilled to be invited to picture a few.

Last night another set of images pleased me greatly. Two sweet people came for dinner and allowed me the delight to capture fleeting moments of their relationship. I offer only the one image as there is still much editing to do, I have to say it’s been rendered in Photoshop but nevertheless I am pleased. I hope you enjoy it too. Thanks to E and I for a lovely evening.

With some delight I accepted an invitation to attend the Aldon Horse Trials at the weekend. My friend was running a trade stand and I always enjoy her company-she sells bright, colourful and very well priced textiles- imported scarves, Pashmina’s, bags and jewellery. The event was certainly not Gatcombe Park or Burleigh- but none the less it attracted the usual coterie of ‘jolly interesting county types’ and some other equally interesting traders.

Now there are always the somewhat obnoxious ‘I will hunt no matter what’ -brigade and I don’t have a lot of time for them. I do however enjoy those who are there for the love of horses, salt of the earth, honest to goodness lovers of horse flesh. There is something rather elemental and so exciting about seeing and hearing horse and rider galloping past at speed. It is wonderful to see the skill of the event rider who can turn their hand from the sensuality and grace of dressage through ring jumping and on to the bravery and power of cross country.

I enjoyed the whole event it was marvellous to be in the autumn countryside and with the late sun low in the sky a glorious day unfolded. It needs saying that I am happy in the company of the woman who invited me- bubbly and bright and it was fun to photograph her at work. More than that I had to take more than a few representative images of the day- yards of tweed and top hats, terriers at every turn and naturally the fine sight of jodhpur clad ‘gals’. It says much about my eye and the vision behind it but I also suggest the images say much about the timeless nature of our glorious West Country.

Yamamoto studied oil painting under Goro Saito in his native city. He presently uses photography to capture images evoking memories. He blurs the border between painting and photography however, by experimenting with his printing surfaces. He dyes, tones (with tea), paints on, tears his photographs. His subjects include: still-lives, nudes, and landscapes. He also makes installation art with his small photographs to show how each print is part of a larger reality.

CoAid and thr flood-affected areas of Andhra Pradesh in India.

Through their network of volunteers, they have delivered much
needed relief supplies to victims of flooding, focusing on people
living beneath the poverty line. They've delivered hundreds of
bags of rice, blankets, tarpaulin sheets, cooking oil, cooking
pots, eating utensils, biscuits, and fresh food items. In total,
they have reached more than 1,200 people in areas that have
received little or no help from the Indian government.

The CoAid teams have proved themselves to be very effective at
delivering the relief supplies, making efficient use of your
generous donations.

But they're not done yet...

Within the last week, a CoAid survey team visited the villages of
Didigu and Pondugala in Andhra Pradesh. These villages are
extremely poor, their only source of income being from the fish
they catch in the Krishna River. The villagers have lost
everything and are desperate. The team met people who were crying
and seemed hopeless. The floods washed away their fishing nets and
destroyed many boats. They have asked CoAid to help them obtain
new fishing nets so they can reestablish their livelihood.

Each net costs $65 (3,000 Indian Rupees) and can last 4-5 years
before needing to be replaced. CoAid is trying to obtain funds to
purchase 100 new nets. No one else is helping these people and
without the ability to provide any income their current situation
looks bleak.

You may have heard the saying, "Give a man a fish and you feed
him for a day. Teach a man to fish and you feed him for a
lifetime." In this case, CoAid is hoping to help these people for
the next few years by providing them the means to help them today.

The fruits of fall are especially important to birds that were hatched this summer. Many youngsters, including cardinals and house finches, are initially quite drab. Their summer diet of high-protein insects allows them to develop quickly but doesn't contribute much to feather color. They don't begin to resemble their parents until late fall, when they eat berries rich in carotenoids. These pigments provide the dye that colors feathers as young birds molt into their adult plumage.

His profile is so humble as to be non-existent1 This is what Jon Walford says .....'Olli K's work is beautifully conceived and executed, focused in its choice of themes, and some of the most beautiful, well-executed work--especially the cloudscapes and landscapes--that I have seen in years.

Overall, I find each of his compositions so judicious, so well composed, rich in color and/or tonal range, and so utterly sublime!"

All I know is that his is amongst the most exciting landscape work I have ever seen.

Irving Penn 1917-2009
"Photographing a cake can be art," Irving Penn asserted when he opened his studio in 1953. Before long he was backing up his statement with a series of advertising illustrations that created a new high standard in the field and established a reputation that has kept him in the top bracket ever since. Set apart stylistically and one of the most imitated among contemporary photographers.

In addition to his work for Vogue magazine (the American, British, and French editions) Penn has been represented in many important photographic collections. In 1958 Irving Penn was named one of "The World’s 10 Greatest Photographers" in an international poll conducted by Popular Photography Magazine. Penn’s statement at the time is a remarkable summation of purpose and idealism: "I am a professional photographer because it is the best way I know to earn the money I require to take care of my wife and children."

His journey to the cover of Vogue was initially as assistant to Lieberman in the 40's Using a borrowed camera, and drawing on his art background and experience, Penn arranged a still life consisting of a big brown leather bag, beige scarf and gloves, lemons, oranges, and a huge topaz. Louis Stettner (1922- ) is a celebrated American photographer whose work includes iconic images of Paris and New York. He was born and raised in Brooklyn, New York but moved to Paris in the 1950s, where he now lives permanently with his family.

Check out this woodland Villa 1 in the Veluwe Zoom area near Arnhem in the Netherlands, which recently won the ’best private interior’ at the Dutch Design Awards. Designed by Powerhouse Company, the house uses large glass doors and windows to allow more sunlight inside and with direct view to the woodland scenery, the large space interior is clean and simple, with modern furnishings.
